Smooshing for a maritime background

Wer mag Smooshing? - Du kennst es nicht? Na, dann beschreib ich es Euch hier. Für alle anderen ist es eine kleine Erinnerung an diese tolle Technik.

Who likes Smooshing? - You do not know it? Well, then I describe it for you here. For all the others it might serve as a little reminder or refresher of this cool technique.

Die Technik des Smooshings ist Euch doch sicherlich bekannt, oder? Man nimmt sich ein paar Stempelkissen (in meinem Fall Distress Oxides), eine Folie, eine Wassersprühflasche, einen Heißluft-Fön und ein Stück Karton. 
Zunächst trägt man eine Farbe vom Stempelkissen auf die Folie auf und sprüht dann Wasser drauf. Dann tupft man den Karton hinein (oder umgekehrt, die Folie auf den Karton). Dann nutzt man den Fön zum Trocknen des Ganzen. Als nächstes wird entweder mit der gleichen Farbe nochmals weiter getupft, oder mit der nächsten. In meinem Fall habe ich drei Balutöne verwendet. Trocknet Eure Werke zwischendurch immer gut, dann erhät man schöne Konturen und es verläuft nicht einfach alles ineinander. 
Den Text und den Anker habe ich ebenfalls mit Distress Oxides gestempelt. Zum Ankerset gibt es eine passende Stanze, mit der ich ihn dann ausgestanzt habe. Die Wellenkanten sind ebenfalls mit Stanzen gemacht. Auf meinen Wasserhintergrund habe ich noch kleine Glaspunkte in zwei Größen geklebt. 

You know smooshing, don´t yuo? You take some stamp pads (I used Distress Oxides), a piece of foil, a water sprayer, a heat gun and a piece of cardstock.
You first apply ink from one stamp pad to your foil and spritz it with water. Then you dab your cardstock into it (or vice versa the foil onto your cardstock). You then dry everything well with your heatgun. Then you either go again with the same colour or you switch to another one to redo the procedure. I used threee shades of blue for my card. Let your cardstock really dry well in between the steps. This results in nice contours and you do not only get a big soup of one colour. 
I stamped the text ("I am in an ocean mood today") and the anchor with Distress Oxides. There is a matching die for the anchor set, which I used for cutting the anchor. The wavy edges are also made with dies. I glued glass pieces to my water background in two sizes.

Und da haben wir sie wieder! ... die großartigen Möwen aus dem Möwen-Gang-Stempelset von Create A Smile. Dieses mal schwimmt sie so im Wasser daher (das Thema der derzeitigen Challenge auf dem Create A Smile Blog lautet "Wasser") und .... macht da was.... nun ja,  wie soll ich es sagen .... Ups! ... was sich der Fisch wohl dabei denkt? Aber wie es Euch auch immer ergehen mag, nehmt´s leicht und versucht dem Motto zu folgen, welches ich aus dem Uplifting Set von Create A Smile genommen habe:"Keep Smiling" :)
And there it is again! ... one of the great seagulls from Create A Smile's Möwen-Gang stamp set. This time it swims in the water (the theme of the current challenge on the Create A Smile blog is "Water") and..... it does something.... well, how am I supposed to say it.... Oops! ... I wonder what the fish is thinking? But whatever happens to you, try to take it easy and to follow the motto I took from the uplifting set from Create A Smile: "Keep Smiling" :)

Da das Hauptmotto also Wasser lautete, habe ich dem Wasser in meiner Karte besondere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Ich habe es mit der Schablone von Create A Smile gemacht, die ich derzeit so liebe. Es hat Augen-förmige Öffnungen und ich dachte mir, dass man damit eine prima Struktur in das Wasser zaubern kann. Dazu habe ich mit verschiedenen Distress Oxides Farben getupft. Vorher hatte ich die Motive gestempelt und mit Rubbelkrepp maskiert. Nachdem alles trocken war wurde er wieder abgerubbelt und die Motive mit Copics und Polychromos koloriert. Der Spruch und das Banner sind einzeln mit Versamark gestempelt und nacheinander in verschiedenen Farben embosst.

Since the main motto was water, I paid special attention to the water in my card. I made it with the stencil from Create A Smile, which I currently love so much. It has eye-shaped openings and I thought that you I can create a great structure with it in the water. I have dabbed it with different Distress Oxides colours. Before that, I had stamped the motives and masked them with liquid frisket. After everything was dry, it was rubbed off again and the motifs were coloured with Copics and Polychromos. The saying and the banner are individually stamped with Versamark and embossed one after the other in different colours.

Mehr über Distress Oxides - Willkommen Anke!

Ja, ich habe meine Follower weiterhin im Blick. Wenn ich es recht in der bereits langen Liste gesehen habe, dann hat sich Anke neu bei mir auf dem stempelfrida Blog registriert. Hurra! Danke Anke, für Dein Interesse an dem, was ich so mache und schreibe.

Heute möchte ich Euch wieder ein bisschen über die Distress Ink Stempelkissen erzählen. Ich hatte ja schon einmal darüber berichtet und hier kommt eine weitere Karte, bei der diese Kissen das Hauptmedium sind, mit dem ich gearbeitet habe.
Today I would like to tell you a bit more about the Distress ink stamp pads. I did tell you about them once already and here is another card, which I made using these ink pads as my main medium.

Die Herstellung
Für diese Karte habe ich den Hintergrund zuerst gestaltet. Dazu habe ich die Farbe von dem Stempelkissen auf ein Craft-sheet abgestreift und danach mit Wasser bespritzt. Dadurch zieht sich die Farbe in Perlen zusammen und man erhält sehr schöne Effekte, wenn man das Papier hindurchzieht oder dran tupft. Zwischendurch habe ich das Papier immer wieder mit einem Heißluftfön getrocknet und die Schritte wiederholt. Außerdem habe ich immer wieder Wasser direkt auf den Hintergrund gegeben. Wie Ihr ja wisst, reagieren die Distress Inks mit Wasser. So entsteht ein schöner Kreide-artiger Look. 
Ehrlich gesagt ist das aber auch eine Herausforderung, wenn man danach direkt auf dem Hintergrund arbeiten möchte. Man kann zwar auf dem Hintergrund stempeln, aber mit Markern hat man so seine Probleme. Mit Copics war es mir zu riskant, denn ich wollte nicht riskieren, die Spitzen mit der pastenartigen Farbe zu verstopfen. Mit wasser-basierten Markern hatte ich keinen Erfolg. Lediglich mit Buntstiften ging es einigermaßen. Ich hatte die Blumen mit Versamark gestempelt und in weiß embosst und wollte sie nachträglich kolorieren. Wie Ihr erkennen könnt, scheint der Hintergrund  ein wenig durch die Blumen durch. 

Making-Of
I started to create the background for my card first and used the distress ink pads for it. I smeared the ink on a craft sheet and spritzed water on the ink. This way little drops form, which result in a nice pattern if you pull your paper through the ink or dip it into them. After drying with a heat gun I repeated this several times and also sprayed water on the background directly. Since the inks react with water the result is a nice chalk like finish. 
But this can be another challenge if you want to work further directly on your background. You can stamp on the background (as done by me), but if you want to draw on it, you might get into trouble. I did not want to ruin my Copic marker tips with the chalky ink and water-based marker did not really work. So I ended up using crayons. I had stamped the flowers with Versamark and embossed them with white powder. You can see that the crayons are not covering up completely so the background shines through the flowers.

Retro

Ihr erinnert Euch vielleicht an den Retro Rubber Challenge Blog, der zum Thema hat, dass wir unseren guten alten Stempelchen wieder Leben einhauchen. Alle Stempel, die ich für meine Karte benutzt habe sind schon Jahre alt. Vor ungefähr drei Jahren hatte ich mich so in die PaperArtsy Stempel verliebt, dass ich einige Blumensets gekauft hatte. In meiner Babypause warteten sie geduldig darauf, benutzt zu werden. Jetzt ist die Zeit reif - und ich liebe sie! Auch die Blumen, die ich für den Hintergrund benutzt habe sind aus einem noch älteren Set von Stampendous!, das ich ganz toll finde, da es so skurrile Blumen und Blumenelemente enthält (und Texte). Nicht unbetont lassen möchte ich das super praktische Set von Winnie&Walter, von dem ich die Punkte benutzt habe. Es enthält auch Sterne und anderes "Kleinzeug", das man prima verwenden kann für ein paar tolle Highlights hier und da.

Retro

You may remember the Retro Rubber Challenge Blog, which has the aim to breathe life into our old stamps again. The stamps I used on my card are all from years ago. I really loved the stamps from PaperArtsy so much that I bought several flower sets about three years ago and during my baby break they were just waiting patiently to being used. Now the time has come and - I love them! Also the flowers in the background from Stampendous! are from a set, which I really love, because they have such a special whimsical look. It contains flowers, flower pieces and text. They are even older. I also want to highlight the stamp set from Winnie&Walter, which I find so versatile, since it has dots and stars and other little things, which are so handy for setting details on your art work.

Frühlingserwachen

Seit diesem Monat habe ich mir ein Stempelabo gegönnt. Ich fand die Idee ganz nett, dass ich mir erstens mal etwas gönne (man sollte immer mal wieder an sich selbst denken! Ja, Du da, liebe Leserin, lieber Leser, Du auch!) und zweitens, dass ich monatlich überrascht werde. Natürlich weiß man nicht ganz genau, was man in einem Abonnement bekommen wird, das ist das Risiko oder auch das Spannende daran, aber man kauft ja nicht die Katze im Sack, denn man kann ja den Stil der Firma oder des Anbieters vorher ansehen und hoffen, dass sich dieser nicht allzu sehr ändern wird über die Zeit des Abonnements. Wenn die Firma schon länger existiert, dann kann man sich normalerweise auch die früheren Monatssets ansehen. 
In meinem Fall habe ich das Monatsstempel-Abonnement von Anne 581 (KLICK) ausgesucht. Die Sets sind Text-fokussiert (also ist die ursprüngliche Zielgruppe vermutlich eher die der Scrapper) und nur ein oder zwei Bildchen sind normalerweise pro Monat dabei. Ihr könnt ja mal auf ihre Seite schauen und ein bisschen stöbern. In Zukunft werdet Ihr dann vermutlich häufiger mal ihre Stempel auf meinen Karten entdecken. Ich fand es aber sehr spannend, vor allem deutsch-sprachige Texte für meine Karten zu bekommen. Sehr häufig griff ich doch bislang auf die "Standards" zurück (wie Happy Birthday, hello, etc.). Längere Sprüche waren mir dagegen oft zu tragend schwer oder zu lang. Das soll in Zukunft anders werden! Die Stempel von Anne 581 lehnen sich an die jeweiligen Monate oder Folgemonate an und sind leicht und witzig. Im März ist es zum Beispiel der Frühling, aber auch Ostern, welches für den kommenden Monat an der Tür klopft. So kann man entsprechende Karten oder andere Projekte schön vorbereiten. 

I thought I would do myself something good and entered a stamp subscription from this month on. Actually, one should here and there treat oneself with some goodie. Isn´t it nice to allow yourself something good each month and on top to also be surprised? Sure, you can not be completely sure that you will like what you get, but this is the risk or the fun with a subscription. But you do know the company before entering and their style most likely will not change completely over time. If the company exists for some time already you can also look at their older items to kind of know what you are getting into. 

My subscription is from Anne 581 (CLICK). The sets are dominated by text pieces, words and short fun and light sentiments (so the original focus group is from my judgement, mainly scrapper) and there are usually only one or two images that come along per month. But I liked the sets so much, since I love to have German words on my cards. So far I quite often used the same words over and over again (like Happy Birthday, hello, etc.) on my cards. I found long sentiments quite heavy mood-wise or space taking on a card so that I am really excited to use the stamps from Anne 581 from now on. Maybe you want to have a look at her site and check out her fun sets. You will most likely find her stamps on my cards more often in the future. The topic of the monthly sets are related to the things happening in the running or the month to come. So for example the March set contains spring words and Easter as a theme. This way you can nicely create stuff matching the season or events from the coming month.

Zur Karte:
Meine liebe Freundin Ilona hatte zu einer Nachfeier ihres Geburtstags in kleiner Bastelfreundinnenrunde eingeladen. Da ihr Geburtstag schon sehr lange her ist und ich ihr damals bereits eine Karte spezifisch zum Geburtstag gemacht hatte, wollte ich ihr jetzt eine passend zur Jahreszeit, Stimmung und natürlich hoffentlich nach ihrem Geschmack machen. 
Die Karte habe ich mit den relativ neuen Ranger Distress Oxides Stempelkissen gemacht. Ich hatte Euch versprochen, auch hiervon zu berichten. Für den Hintergrund habe ich mit drei Farben gewischt, gewuselt, gestempelt und mit Wasser gesprüht. Das Tolle an den Distress Inks ist erstens, dass sie eher auf dem Papier aufliegen, so dass man sie schön über eine lägere Zeit vermischen und verteilen kann. Zweitens reagieren sie mit Wasser. Wenn man also Wasser aufbringt, z.B. mit einem Sprühfläschchen, dann kann man tolle Effekte erzielen. Man hat die Möglichkeit entweder nass in nass zu arbeiten oder die Spielwiese zwischendurch zu trocknen, so lassen sich die Farben auch übereinander aufbringen. Die Distress Oxides sind wunderschön deckend. Das ist die dritte Eigenschaft, die mich ganz besonders beeindruckt hat. Und zwar so sehr, dass ich in den letzten Wochen fast ausschließlich mit ihnen arbeite. Sie geben einen wunderschönen satten Stempelabdruck. 
Für den Hintergrund habe ich dann noch einige Kleckse mit anderen Farben gestempelt und gezeichnet. Die Blumen und Blätter habe ich auf den fertigen Hintergrund gestempelt. Details habe ich mit Buntstiften nachgezeichnet oder zugefügt. Außerdem habe ich damit Schattierungen eingebracht. Zum Schluß habe ich die schönen Worte aus dem Märzset von Anne 581 aufgestempelt. Dazu habe ich sicherheitshalber mit einer Stempelfunktionsplatte gearbeitet, aber die Distress Oxides haben bereits beim ersten Abdruck überzeugt, so dass ich nicht nochmal nachstempeln musste. 

About my card:
My dear friend Ilona invited a small group of craft friends to party her birthday. Since her birthday was quite a long time ago already and I had sent her a card with a birthday theme already, I wanted to make a card which fits to the season, to the current mood and hopefully would also match her taste. 
You might know the quite new Ranger Distress Oxide stamp pads already. I promised to tell you a little more about them. I used three colours to create the background with whiping, smooshing, stamping and with spraying water. One of the special characteristics of the Oxides is that they somehow lie on the paper surface so that you can mix them and spread them for quite some time. The second nice characteristic is that they react with water so you can create nice effects by adding or spraying water onto them. You can either do it wet on wet or you let your craft piece dry in between the steps. This way you can even overlay more colours on top of each other. The third characteristic is that they are quite opaque. I love this property so much that I recently use to use them almost exclusively for my stamping. They really give a very rich imprint. 
After creating the background I added a bit more blur and spots with further colours and with a marker. I then stamped the flowers and leaves and stressed and added details with pencils. I also brought shades into the image with them. I finally stamped the nice words (they read: spring awakening, birds chirp, day dreaming) from the Anne 581 March kit with a stamp platform to be on the safe side. But it was not really necessary, since the first imprint was already very rich so one time stamping was enough.
